Copyediting
There are countless details that go into making your document consistent, clear, and easy to follow.
These details are what keep your reader on track and focused on your message. It’s about forming a relationship of trust and credibility between you and your reader.
What I cover:
Appropriate application of a style guide or house style (I use Chicago and MLA)
Maintain consistency, be it with a chosen font style, way of spelling (American vs. Canadian, for example), treatment of numerals, etc.
Grammar, style, and punctuation matters including (but certainly not limited to):
Proper capitalization
Hyphenation
Abbreviation and acronyms
Dialogue tags
Fix any unintentional shifts in verb tense and look out for repetitive words or phrasing
Call attention to biased or potentially harmful language and stereotypes that feed into stigma
Catch missed words and other typos
Check cross-references
Flag potentially libelous or plagiarized writing
Basic fact-checking of names, places, dates, etc.
Stylistic/line editing
This level of editing explores your writing line by line at a creative, detail-focused level.
What I do is check that your writing’s vocabulary, language, and tone is suitable for the intended reading level of your audience.
My job is to:
Examine paragraph and sentence structure
Recognize the author’s intent and redirect focus if necessary
Keep track of logic and flow
Eliminate wordiness while maintaining the author’s unique voice
Manuscript evaluation
As the name implies, I read your manuscript and write a detailed evaluation. In the report, I:
Highlight the text’s strengths and weaknesses
Offer solutions for areas that may need improvement or a directional shift
Give my best assessment as to its marketability based on current publishing trends
Authenticity reading
Also known as a sensitivity or targeted beta reader, I read through your manuscript and evaluate how you’ve represented identities and experiences. There are many topics (race, gender, disability, religion, etc.) on which a sensitivity reader whose own experiences allow them to read for. I highlight problematic areas pertaining to:
Bullying, cyberbullying
Body image and self-perception
Emotional abuse
Feminism and intersectionality
Generational issues (i.e., as a millennial)
Neurodiversity (i.e., ADHD)
Queer/bisexual identity
At its conclusion you’ll receive a summary detailing my report as well as your document, where I’ll have noted my findings and offered possible solutions.
